Politicians' Group
The primary goal of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network is to put health high on the social, economic and political agenda of city governments. Health is the business of all sectors, and local governments are in a unique leadership position, with power to protect and promote their citizens’ health and well-being.
Members of the UK Healthy Cities Network must as part of their accreditation have political sign up and support at a local level. As part of their commitment to the Healthy Cities movement each town, city or local authority have a nominated elected member who work alongside the city co-ordinators to support and champion the Healthy Cities movement at a local level.
These elected members form the Network Politicians Group the aims of this group are:-
- to identify shared agendas and opportunities facing UK cities and towns, discuss and develop responses to common challenges, and develop mechanisms for multi-city action and shared learning;
- to develop a powerful cross-country and cross-city collective voice and advocacy role in relation to health, wellbeing, equity and sustainable development;
- to develop strategies for building cross-party support and ensuring continuity for Healthy Cities;
- to identify connections between health-related work and other local government priorities – and develop understanding of how the Healthy Cities approach can enhance partnership working, build synergy and embed health and health equity within all local policies;
- to facilitate effective collaboration between different levels of government and governance – and encourage joined-up policy thinking, and
- to strengthen links to the WHO European Regional Office, the European Union and other international bodies.
Membership
Membership is open to nominated elected members from cities, towns and local authorities. In some instances this may be delegated to other local politicians who carry an appropriate portfolio. The Group may also be supported by external expertise as necessary. The group is chaired by a nominated lead elected from the group membership.
