About the Network
Over 20 years and through many changes in political systems and public health initiatives, Healthy Cities has been steadfast in its focus on political leadership and partnership working to tackle the social determinants of health and health inequality. These values have stood the test of time and are as crucial now as they were when first proposed. As we come to the end of Phase V and into Phase VI (starting early 2014) of the Healthy Cities movement, there is a real opportunity to embed these values still further and support a broad-based movement for health and health equity in all policies.
The aims of the UK Healthy Cities Network are to:
- enhance learning and build capacity through sharing ideas, experience and best practice
- widen participation in the Healthy Cities movement and support member towns and cities to develop and test innovative approaches to emerging public heath issues
- become a strong collective voice for health, wellbeing, equity and sustainable development – informing and influencing local, regional, country and national policy.
Established with funding from the Department of Health for England, the UK Healthy Cities Network is one of 30 national Healthy Cities networks across Europe, and is one of 20 accredited by WHO as a member of the Network of European Healthy Cities Networks.
Since it was established in 2011, the UK Healthy Cities Network has worked to broaden its membership to include a wide range of cities and towns that are committed to Healthy Cities principles and approaches and are keen to be involved in the movement. As a result the Network membership has expanded from 14 to over 27 members,
